Summer Visit to Acadia

I’ve just returned from my annual late Spring/ early Summer visit to Acadia. The main reason for the visit was to attend the Art in the Park fair in Bar Harbor over Father’s Day weekend. I’ve had a booth there since 2016 and it’s always a lot of fun to put up several of my large prints, including a 40x60-inch metal print, which is always popular. And it’s just great to meet visitors from all over the US and the world and talk about my work with them. And the icing on the cake is that several dozen people go home with my prints or coffee table books- as an artist, there’s nothing more satisfying.

After the art fair, my wife and I stick around for a few days to hike and enjoy the Park. This year we rented e-bikes for the first time and had a great time riding on the carriage trails. After she flew home on Wednesday, I had a couple days in the park to myself to work on new images. I definitely feel the pressure to create, knowing I only have a couple days before I begin the long drive home to the Midwest in a car loaded down with my art fair setup and whatever prints and books didn’t sell.

Foggy afternoon at Hunters Beach

This year, I only had one full day to myself… and it was overcast and foggy all day long… but I loved it. You see, I always try to avoid photographing the cliche, postcard images with blue skies, sunny weather and puffy white clouds. Don’t get me wrong– I love weather like that, but for artistic photography, I’m always looking for conditions that lend more atmosphere and character. And Thursday was such a beautiful day. The ponds were more still and reflective, low clouds drifted in and out of scenes, revealing then hiding different elements. In fact, the weather was so good, that when I’d drive out of the fog, it was a letdown and I found myself searching for more areas of fog to work in.

Peaceful scene at Seawall

I’ve come home with hundreds of new images to begin working on. I’ll probably edit those down to just a few dozen of the best ones, then post a handful here over the coming weeks and months. Stay tuned for more…
